Designing and Constructing for a Bigger Purpose by Jim Gordon, Schrader and Company
The owners of this home needed no persuasion to remodel green. This husband and wife are passionate advocates for a clean, sustainable environment. They were clear in their direction to us: "Remodel our space green."
Specifically, they wanted the house updated to include increasing the amount of natural light and improving the homes traffic flow. For example the small dark and dated kitchen hindered the wide-ranging culinary skills of the lady of the house and the existing mudroom entry opened into a tight hallway. The homeowners wanted to enlarge the living space to improve workability in the kitchen and to create a more inviting entry to the home.
Designing for the desired outcome was made even more challenging because the homeowners did not want to impact an adjacent sunroom and the existing roof line.
Fortunately, the original construction of the home provided the solutions that our design team could build upon while accomplishing the homeowner’s objectives.
The layout of the original garage and sunroom formed an alcove that offered the desirable location to provide the solutions the owners were seeking. Constructing an addition here increased the available square footage that when added to space captured from relocating an existing bathroom and laundry room, enabled the footprint of the kitchen and mudroom entry to be increased. As a result the space became better utilized through its efficient and functional designed layout, and just as importantly provided the desired increase of natural light by adding additional new windows and sun tunnels throughout the renovated spaces.
All the homeowner’s objectives and design desires where constructed utilizing sustainable materials and practices.
