Nestled in a little cove along the shore of Lake George, NY sat a swampy tent site once set aside for weekend trekkers to relax after a day of hunting and fishing. As time passed, small rustic camps began to shape the landscape. The weekend trekkers found that this property would make an excellent location for a beach side community for their growing families. The grandfather of the owners of this particular camp built the original structure in the 1940’s. A three bedroom, 730 square foot camp provided an ideal rustic retreat in the Adirondacks. As the decades passed, the camp underwent several repair and renovations, but the family knew something more extensive would be required to allow for the enjoyment of the next generations.
The owners choose to demolish the existing 1940’s camp and build a new one from the ground up. By doing so, we were able to design and build a structure that is larger (now 850 square feet) while adhering to a strict set of set back and lot limitations. The camp can now comfortably sleep 8 to 10 people, and includes all the modern amenities that make living and relaxing lakeside even more enjoyable. It is still a seasonal use structure, but it is far from being rustic. The new structure was super-insulated with the intent to extend the seasonal use. Inside you will also find a complete modern kitchen and bath, a sitting area, a dining table that accommodates eight, three bedrooms, and a loft area. The entire camp was designed utilizing Aging-In-Place principles. Wider doorways, lever handed knobs and fixtures and easily assessable entries that will allow the family and friends easy use of the camp for years to come.
When given the luxury of owning lakeside property you must capitalize on it. Preserving the view of Lake George was one of the primary objectives of the owners. Every exterior wall that faces the lake has a window with an unobstructed view. During the design stage the owners suggested lowering the height of the front porch deck so those inside would not be obstructed from a clear view of the lake.
The new structure has the feel of a traditional Adirondack Great camp with Craftsman style elements. Throughout you’ll find pictures and artifacts from the original camp that cause you to pause and reflect on the family history. Some of the old pine boards were reclaimed and used as wainscoting and closet shelving.
With smart design and durable construction this family is guaranteed to experience many decades of enjoyment as they enjoy their new space all while paying tribute to the generations before them along the shore of Lake George.
